Are you shopping today for Cyber Monday? If so, consider purchasing some extra gifts for our neighbors in need this holiday season. We are in need of new toys and gift cards for our Vincent’s Angels Christmas Program. This program provides an in-person shopping experience for parents, grandparents, and guardians to shop for Christmas gifts for the children in their lives. If you are interested in donating to our Vincent’s Angels Christmas Program, we ask that all donations be dropped off at our Erlanger location, 2655 Crescent Springs Road. We are looking for both boy and girl toys of all ages, including up to age 17 years old. For our older children, we are also looking for gift cards to stores such as Walmart, Target, and Kohls. All donations are very much appreciated. We also have an amazon wish list (https://a.co/gABKN1H) where you can shop for gifts from the comfort of your own home and have the gifts sent directly to us! The Cincinnati metro area leads the nation for the fastest pace of rent hikes, leaving neighbors struggling to pay their monthly rent. “The overall median rent in the Cincinnati metro area reached $1,682 in August, up about 25.8% from the same month a year ago.” In the last year, we have provided over $750,000 in rent and utility assistance alone, to keep neighbors safe in their homes. We will continue to help prevent homelessness by providing emergency assistance to our neighbors in need year-round. #MissionMonday #Rent #EmergencyAssistance #NeighborsYouCanCountOn #SVdPNKY

Happy #MissionMonday! Today is National Child Health Day, a day dedicated to supporting and bringing awareness to the well-being of children in America. Nutritious food plays a crucial role in the health and development of children, and we are dedicated to helping make sure no child goes hungry in Northern Kentucky. We house three choice food pantries in Erlanger, Florence, and Falmouth where we provide families with access to healthy food. The opportunity to choose foods that the family likes while meeting their dietary needs provides a comfortable experience and cuts down on food waste. Are you hungry to help? Give online on our website or shop our Amazon Wish List at https://a.co/9ndCuFO. Thank you for being a neighbor we can count on.

Today we celebrate and honor the feast day of Saint Vincent de Paul. He dedicated his life to serving others and is known as “The Apostle of Charity” and “The Father of the Poor”. We look to him for guidance as we serve our NKY neighbors in need. We are blessed to be a part of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, made up of nearly 800,000 Vincentian volunteers around the world.

September 26, 2022

Happy #MissionMonday! We are a network of friends building a more just world with the help of over 500 Vincentian volunteers at 29 parish conferences throughout Northern Kentucky. Are you looking for a way to get involved in your community? We would love for you to join our network and become a Vincentian volunteer. A rewarding experience with supportive people. Dennis Coyne, Vincentian at St. Barbara Conference, shares his insight on what it means to be a part of St. Vincent de Paul. “Being a Vincentian volunteer is a wonderful way to serve the Lord’s people in need and to grow in faith. We Vincentians attempt to live the words from the Sermon on the Mount every day. It is a challenge that gives purpose to every day.” If you would like more information on becoming a Vincentian, please reach out to our Conference Relations Manager, Sister Judith at smjudith.niewahner@svdpnky.org to find a parish conference near you! St. Vincent de Paul Northern Kentucky welcomes all who would like to help our neighbors in need.

Happy #MissionMonday! An important mission of our organization is to prevent homelessness by providing rent and utility assistance to neighbors in need. Helping to keep families safe in their homes is more important now than ever as our community faces a lack of affordable housing. There is a 78,559 shortage of affordable rental units available for extremely low-income renters in the state of Kentucky alone (National Low Income Housing Coalition). Since October 2021, we have provided an astounding $722,000 worth of rent and utility assistance to neighbors struggling to make ends meet. The increased need for assistance arose from record high rent increases and evictions in our area. You can help! Give online at www.svdpnky.org to ensure families have a roof over their heads. If you need assistance, please give our helpline a call at 859-341-3219.

Today is #MissionMonday! Have you heard about our Sweet Dreams Bed Program? Through this program, we provide beds to children, the elderly, and disabled individuals who are without a bed to sleep in. With school back in session, the importance of sleep is especially vital for children. According to Texas Children’s Hospital “Sleep is especially important for children due to the impact it has on both mental and physical development. Sleep is the time for restoration and for children’s bodies to recharge and retain the information they have learned throughout the day.” Our Sweet Dreams Bed Program is a crucial program providing a bed for a good night’s rest. The need for beds in our community is on the rise as we receive numerous calls in our Call Center from parents in need of a bed for their child. We have provided 765 beds since October of 2021, thanks to the generous community and The Pfau Foundation, Diocese of Covington Diocesan Parish Annual Appeal (DPAA), PNC Charitable Trusts/Schroth Family Foundation, Marge and Charles Schott Foundation, Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, and the Fifth Third Foundation – Ohio Valley Foundation. If you would like to help us provide a bed to a neighbor in need, you can give online on our website and designate your gift to our Sweet Dreams Bed Program. Thank you for your support!

Today is Blessed Frédéric Ozanam’s feast day, founder of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul traces its origins to Paris in 1833, where Frederic and five of his peers were challenged by their classmates to demonstrate what they were doing to meet the needs of the city of Paris’s poor. The students walked the streets of Paris, engaging in person-to-person ministry by providing food and clothing, confident that Christ would be revealed through their loving acts. They formed the first “Conference of Charity” on April 23, 1833, and adopted, as their Patron, St. Vincent de Paul, who alerted the world to social disparity. The students formalized their work by changing the official name to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Similar groups grew in Paris, then to the rest of France, and eventually throughout the Christian world to visit those in need as an extension of God’s love. Now in over 150 different countries, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is growing close to 1,000,000 members of Vincentians serving their neighbors in need. Happy Feast Day to Frédéric Ozanam! Without you, we would be unable to assist our many NKY neighbors in need!

Happy #MissionMonday! Every #MissionMonday we share our neighbors’ stories and the outreach we provide with the help of our Vincentian volunteers. On our first #MisssionMonday, we are sharing the story of Jackie. Jackie reached out to us because she took out a predatory loan to cover some expenses and was unable to break the cycle of high-interest payments. This threatened her ability to reach financial stability. Her situation qualified her to receive a St. Vincent de Paul Microloan to pay off her predatory loan. Our Microloan program provides a very low-interest loan with financial mentoring. The mentor works with the Microloan recipient to not only on meet the obligations of the loan, but also to provide support and advice to reach financial stability through budgeting, improved credit, and saving.
Through our Microloan Program, Jackie was able to pay off her high-interest loan, improve her credit score significantly, and pay off the Microloan, all in less than a year with the help of her mentor. Jackie is now able to focus on saving and is working toward purchasing a new car. She shared that the experience of receiving the Microloan and being mentored was “beneficial, successful, and flexible.” We were happy to assist Jackie in reaching financial stability and to give her the confidence to meet her financial goals. We are currently looking for mentors to help with our Microloan program. If you feel inclined to help others in a unique way and have a knack for finance, please reach out to our Volunteer Coordinator, Mark Bradley by email at mark.bradley@svdpnky.org or phone at 859-426-2649. We’ll see you next week for another #MissionMonday!

Research indicates that a good night’s sleep helps children perform better in school. Without a bed to call their own, children may be restless and tired during the school day. Our Sweet Dreams Bed Program provides a bed to a child now sleeping on the floor or in a chair.
We would like to recognize and thank the following foundations for their financial support of nearly $80,000 to support our bed program in the past year: The Pfau Foundation, Diocese of Covington Diocesan Parish Annual Appeal (DPAA), PNC Charitable Trusts/Schroth Family Foundation, Marge and Charles Schott Foundation, Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, and the Fifth Third Foundation – Ohio Valley Foundation. Happy Monday! We would like to thank these wonderful neighbors for their food donations at our Cold Spring Choice Pantry! Thank you for being neighbors we can count on.

July 9, 2022

Your recent gifts to our pantry make a difference! We have doubled the number of people we’ve served compared to last year during this same time period. We’ve provided over $175,000 worth of groceries to families in need since October. We know it is a very difficult time now for some of our neighbors. We can only do this with your help! Thank you for sharing food (and hope!!) with those in need!

July 8, 2022

We’d like to share the story of a family who recently visited our food pantry so that you can see the impact your gift has on your neighbors. They agreed to share their story as an expression of their gratitude. On a limited income due to a disability, these grandparents have been raising their grandson with special needs for the last 10 years. With rising energy and food prices, this family is struggling to get by in today’s economic climate. They lost their home in 2020 and are now in the process of converting a garage into a house. They first visited us for an air conditioner in June to help cool their new home and learned of the pantry during that visit. As they work hard to get back on their feet, their visit to the pantry this month has helped them save their limited income to pay their monthly bills and also make sure they can provide food for their family, especially that fast growing grandson! They are grateful that St. Vincent de Paul is able to provide this support during a challenging time. The grandmother commented, “I try to budget, but it doesn’t matter how I plan, there just isn’t enough for everything we need right now. Times are tough and it can be scary, but that is life sometimes. At least we are all together and have a roof over our heads. We’ll make it.” Thank you for supporting our pantry outreach and enabling us to share hope with our neighbors weathering a difficult time in their lives. We are blessed to serve with your help!

Our Summer Breeze Program sponsored by St. Elizabeth Healthcare officially began yesterday and will run through August 31. It is the only annual heat relief program in Northern Kentucky that provides new AC units and fans to neighbors of all ages suffering from a documented medical condition such as asthma or COPD. Thank you WCPO 9 for stopping by and talking to our Executive Director, Karen Zengel about this important program that helps economically disadvantaged clients with severe medical conditions stay healthy and cool in their homes all summer long.

THANK YOU to everyone who supported us yesterday for #KyGives22 Day! We especially want to thank those who donated to help our NKY neighbors in need.

May 10, 2022

In the past year, we have provided $951,000 in emergency financial assistance. Many neighbors who reach out to us are experiencing unexpected circumstances that threaten their financial stability. Sometimes they have nowhere to turn for help and call on us for assistance.

May 10, 2022

Our organization provides rent and utility assistance year round to neighbors in need in NKY. Since October 2021, we have provided $470,000 in rent and utilities assistance alone. With the rising cost of rent and lack of affordable housing, many are struggling to keep up with their monthly financial obligations. We are here to keep families together in their homes.

Today is Kentucky Gives Day 2022! It is a 24-hour opportunity for Kentuckians to come together to support Kentucky charities in an effort to raise funds for program needs. Did you know that “1 in 7 adults and 1 in 6 children in Kentucky lack consistent access to enough food for a healthy, active lifestyle?” “67% of neighbors who receive assistance with food have to choose between paying for utilities and paying for food, with 32% reporting making this choice every month.” Donate this #KYGives22 day to ensure that families don’t have to choose between food on the table or lights on in their home.
